In 1980, Shanker and his late wife Janet opened a small restaurant in Brahma Lodge called Janet’s Restaurant. After five years the demand for South Indian cuisine increased so much that Shanker and Janet needed to expand the business thus moving to Main North Rd, Prospect.
After 24 years at that location, first known as Gandhi’s and then as Shanker’s, popularity and support for the restaurant exceeded all expectations. Winning the Life Style Food Awards for Best Indian Restaurant in Australia in 2007, Best Asian Restaurant in South Australia in 2009 and making it to the finals of the 2009 Messenger Press Awards for the Best Fine Dining Restaurant provided Shanker with the impetus to search for a bigger and better premises.
Since moving into the historic Art Deco former Court House at 89 Prospect Rd in November 2009 Shanker has expanded his menu to include some ever popular dishes from the tandoor. The new menu, matched with undoubtedly one of the best wine lists of any Indian restaurant in the country, has proven very popular with both new and old customers alike.
Now with a focus on providing a truly fine dining experience Shanker, his daughter Premila, son Maheson and loyal staff are determined to continue to offer their customers only the best quality food, wine and service.

Caffe Cena Ristorante and Pizzeria

The splendid traditions of great Italian dining are on offer at Caffe Cena, 101 Prospect Road.
Owners Dianne and Anthony are committed to presenting the very best in pasta, pizza and other classic dishes at reasonable prices in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere – just like dining in Italy.
Over more than 6 years, Caffe Cena has developed a strong following with locals and visitors alike who flock there for the lazy Sunday brunches, business lunches and casual dinners with friends.
“Our kitchen is open from 8am to late seven days a week so people know they can always get a great meal or snack whenever they need,” Anthony said.
“We have an extensive wine list featuring local and imported wines and a good range of beers, coffees and soft drinks – plenty of choice for even the most discriminating diner,” he said.
Caffe Cena is not only a favourite place for meals, coffee and snacks but they also cater for many family occasions such as christening breakfasts, social club gatherings and business lunch meetings.
“We have many groups booking large tables for special occasions and we love to spoil them when they choose our café for their celebrations.” Dianne said.
“Our chefs love creating customised menus for each individual group and good communication with the organisers is essential for the function’s success,” she said.
People have gathered at Caffe Cena since it opened its doors several years ago and the clientele has continued to grow. The quality of the food and service has not changed but Dianne and Anthony think it is time for a facelift.
“We are planning a revamp of the café and we hope to have it finished for Christmas,” Dianne said, “and we are incorporating a lounge, conversation area as well as the traditional table and chair settings.”
“When we are busy, which is most of the time, things can get a bit noisy so we are going to incorporate some soft furnishing to absorb some of the noise,” Anthony said.
As for how Dianne and Anthony view Prospect Road, they said “We think the locals are great – they are all so friendly. Our staff love working here and that shows with the great service they give. Yes, Prospect Road was an excellent choice for our business.”

Cibo Espresso Prospect

Testimony to the authenticity of Cibo’s ‘A Little Italy’ tag is the number of Italian Australian families enjoying coffee and the espresso bar experience at Cibo Espresso on 124C Prospect Road.
Diva and Anita both shared the dream of operating their own ‘Cibo Espresso’ café.
“We loved the feel of the Cibo concept which echoes the many coffee bars lining the streets and piazzas all over Italy,” Diva said.
“The highest quality of the Cibo Espresso coffee blend and the artisan-made Italian products had long been an obsession of ours and we hoped others would share it,” she said.
The cheerful hubbub of the many patrons indicates they have achieved their goal.
But what might well set Cibo Espresso Prospect apart from other cafes is its beautiful location and the interaction it provides with the community. The locale is being enthusiastically developed by Diva and Anita in cooperation with Prospect Council and its plans for the setting.
The Vine Street Plaza is nestled between the historic Prospect Town Hall and Cibo and this setting creates a space which attracts families, artists, performers and dog owners adding to the Cibo experience.
“I love the village feel of Prospect – our clientele reflect such an eclectic and interesting group that each day offers something stimulating and diverse,” Diva said, “and it’s always a delight to watch families relaxing over coffee, gelati or something else from our range while the children play on the steps of the Town Hall and the Plaza,” Anita said.
“We take advantage of the ideal ambience of the Plaza particularly in Summer when we have concerts and performances late into the evening,” she said.
“Anita and I are liaising with the Council regarding the installation of a giant chess sets in the Plaza which will enhance the already established diverse social feel of our café,” Diva added.
“One of our regular customers once told me that our store felt like an extension of her own home,” she said, “and I can’t imagine a better compliment for our business.”
“Locals and visitors often comment not only on the calibre of coffee and food here at Cibo but also the friendliness of the staff and other customers,” Anita said.
“Both Diva and I recognize how lucky we are to work in such a great atmosphere and we believe Cibo has added something significant to the growing vibrancy of Prospect Road,” she said.
